Camp empowers children with asthma to take control of their disease, which not only improves their health, but also improves their self-image and self-esteem. The majority of campers across the nation are from low-income families and attend camp on camperships for the full or partial cost of camp. Since these families are dealing with the expense of asthma on a daily basis, we prefer not to charge them a camper fee by providing camperships. The average campership for a week-long, overnight camp is $500. These camperships are made available through donations and grant funds. (The average cost of camp for a week-long overnight camp is $500.)
Asthma can affect anyone, but there is evidence that suggests socioeconomic and geographic factors have an impact on asthma prevalence. The best way to combat poverty is through education. By improving asthma management, particularly for children of low income, we are working to increase the ability of these children to attend more school days and positively affect not only their health, but also their economic futures.
Your generous gift can provide an invaluable experience to a child with asthma! The camper fee assists camps to provide asthma education programs about making positive behavior changes, teaching children with asthma to recognize to learning asthma self-management, which can improve their daily lives, as well as fun outdoor activities. Together, we can help save lives of youth with asthma today and keep them healthy tomorrow.
